Flipping Your Side Hustle into a Legit Company: Formation

While writing this post, I am two weeks and some change shy of my 32nd birthday. Pop champagne! I have been an entrepreneur for 10 of those fabulous years in various industries. I have seen some moderate success, and there have been times where broke was my first, middle, and last name. Thankfully, I have a career as an IT Project Program Management Advisor that has kept my household afloat despite the wild-heart of my entrepreneurial spirit. It is with my whole heart that I wish for no one to spend unnecessarily or blindly make some of the asinine business decisions that I have made in the past.

I have always been a dreamer and I always knew how to make a dollar out of fifteen cents; and because I graduated with a B.S. in Commerce and Business Administration, my friends somehow got the impression that I knew everything about business…fresh out of The University. So, they would often ask me about legitimizing their hustle.  Whenever I got the call  to help them start their business from nothing but a concept or to write a business plan, I did the research and delivered top notch results. After struggling to find my passion, I listened to my very first “client” and decided to turn my side hustle of writing business plans and forming businesses into a full-blown Small Business Consulting firm. Just now, I have become inspired to deliver this “free game” in a series.

Though anyone can make this information applicable to their situation, Millennials are often stereotyped in a negative light. I wanted to provide a ray of sunshine to my generational demographic in regards to demystifying how to start a business while having Moet taste on a Four Loko budget. Kings, Queens, and those in-between I present to you the first part of my series The Millennial Guide to Flipping Your Side Hustle into a Legit Company: Formation.

Major Key

Picking the best-fitting business structure for your company is so important! As a Small Business Consultant, I usually advise my clients to start with an LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) over choosing a Sole Proprietorship. It provides limited liability protection in which your personal assets are not considered for company debts and other financial responsibilities. If you are an Independent Sales Consultant or similar, Sole Proprietorship may work for your situation. However, please consult with your accountant and/or business consultant. If you need guidance, do not hesitate to contact my company Renvest Consulting Group. We have an affordable bundle that can be made in payment installments which includes the following with a 30-day turnaround:

  • LLC Filing: State of your choice – excludes state filing fees
  • Legal Operating Agreement: required in some states but is essential especially if entering into a multi-member LLC
  • Business License and Permit Compliance Report for all municipality levels
  • 200 Standard-Issue Business Cards
  • High-resolution logo.

New Phone, Who Dis?!

Please, I beg of thee, have a separate number for your business activity. Before you say, “I don’t have the money!” hear me out (read me out? *shrugs*). You don’t have to start out with an additional cell phone, just yet. I heard that Google Voice is being phased out, so here are some of my affordable suggestions based on personal experience.

  1. My favorite second number alternative is Sideline App for Business. It gives you a second number with the ability to share with a team. The phone rings simultaneously to everyone that has team access to the number. It’s feature-rich and only costs $9.99/month.
  2. Desk phones can be used for more than collecting dust…who knew?! If you have an office space or would prefer a traditional phone setup, Vonage Business gets my vote hands down. It has all the bells and whistles one would want and need in a Business Phone System, and you can also download the complementary app to take calls and texts on-the-go. I can’t list everything that’s included on here, but my absolutely favorite is the auto-attendant feature (Press 1 for X, Press 2 for Y, etc). What makes this feature go slap off is that you have the option to have a voice actor record the auto attendant and voicemail options for you! From my past experience, I spent around a smooth $50/month with the phone being included for free; the only thing you need to have in place is a reliable internet connection. Contact Vonage Business to get the most up-to-date pricing.

Feds Watching

Before you can get a business bank account, credit, or anything dealing with being recognized as a legitimate company, you NEED a Federal EIN (Employer Identification Number) issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This 9-digit number is essential to establishing your business footprint across the board. There are a kazillion companies offering to register your EIN for a small fee. Save yourself a few coins, and complete the registration yourself. Filing an EIN IS 100% free if you register yourself! The IRS has a very convenient EIN online application; and in most cases, you should receive the EIN number after the application has been submitted. By all means, if you are struggling with completing the form yourself, contact us at Renvest Consulting Group to assist you. EIN Registration is included in our Business Formation 101 Bundle.

Whew! We covered a lot, and I am beat! I hope I was able to give you some guidance in part one of this series – Formation. I listed the subtopics in order per how I help my clients in setting up their business. However, feel free to inbox on any social media platforms or contact me via my webpage if you have any additional questions. Be on the lookout for the second part in this series – Money Moves.

Glow Sis Glow: The Pretty Hustler

Our next Glow Sis Glow feature is a young lady I have known for many moons. We are always connected by our passion for entrepreneurship. Roshi is a woman of many talents and dominates in her field. Be inspired by the Pretty Hustler and her journey through entrepreneurship.

We love the Pretty Hustler Movement! Tell us your story that transpired into this amazing journey?

I was working at a salon where I did multicultural hair. The owner asked me to stop doing the Caucasian women’s hair so the environment became intolerable for me. I then decided to branch off and start my own mobile beauty business. I called it The Pretty Hustler To Go. People would always call and ask to speak to The Pretty Hustler; so that’s who I became.

You are a person who does a little bit of EVERYTHING!! Explain to our readers how you were able to focus on a talent and market that skill.

I had to be really honest with myself about what I was good at. Not just average but something that set me apart. I then had to incorporate my business and marketing knowledge. Without this particular skillset, my process would be mediocre at best. Honestly, I was thorough about what brought me the most peace.

Client

What advice would you give others who may have many different talents and are trying to break out into the industry?

You have to find your lane and stay in it. I used my talent as an artist to fuel something I loved which was the beauty industry. It’s cool to have multiple talents but the specialty is what keeps you relevant. Break your goals down into small tasks. A solid foundation that drives revenue will support your other endeavors.

There is very stiff competition in your industry. How would you describe your journey as a small business owner in such a competitive market?

It’s definitely had its share of cut throats moments. But at the end of the day you just have to remember the first thing you sell is yourself. Everyday I remember that I’m selling myself. It keeps me grounded and relatable which is what it takes to build a loyal clientele

Client

Can you tell us about a time in your life where you faced a major obstacle that turned into a lesson well learned?

I wouldn’t say I have a one time. I’m learning as I go. Some hiccups were bigger than others but that’s all apart of the journey.

Here at Twisted. Curly. Cool. we thrive on inspiration from others. Tell us some of your favorite women and how their stories inspire you.

Madame CJ Walker because of course she is a pioneer in this industry. She’s the OG Hustler lol. I’m inspired by people like Erykah Badu because she makes a living being exactly who she is.

Do you have a favorite quote that empowers you? If so, how do you apply this quote to your journey?

My recipe for life is not being afraid of myself, afraid of what I think or of my opinions- eartha kitt

I have to be who I am without fear, that’s what’s keeps me at the top of my game.

Client

We want to hear more about you. Are there any future projects from the Pretty Hustler our readers should be looking out for? How can our readers contact you for more information?

I want to get my Hustlers some merchandise and workshops out. Classes are also being setup so that I can start to train other artists. All of my contact information is on my website; ThePrettyHustler.com .

Do you have any final words of inspiration?

Nothing changes if nothing changes. Get up everyday with a purpose and your business will always be successful. Life is too short not to go for it!

Xoxo, The Pretty Hustler

How to balance a 9 to 5 while perfecting your 5 to 9

Side Hustle Chronicles

We’ve all seen the ‘why work for someone else’ posts COUPLED with a demand for cash or your life’s going to be trashy forever.  Listen! There is nothing wrong with providing a way for yourself and/or your family. There is also NOTHING wrong with you if you love your 9 to 5 job. The life of hustling (legally of course) for your next meal is not appealing to everyone. I’ve always had dreams of becoming an entrepreneur because entrepreneurship is strong within my family. As I grew older, I realized that working 80 to 90 hours a week just to make half of what I was making at my job wasn’t going to cut it. I tailored those dreams towards working smarter, not harder. Twisted Curly Cool is only a small portion of my journey. Here are a few tips on how I am balancing my 9 to 5 while financing my 5 to 9.

BE REALISTIC

RULE NUMBER 1! UNLESS IT IS OF ABSOLUTE NECESSITY, please do not quit your job for the unknown.

I get it. You have a million dollar idea and your co-workers are getting on your nerves. Think it through sis! When I moved back to Atlanta, my job didn’t work out as planned. Of course hubby was working, but God bless the child who has her own!  It was quite stressful trying to pull my share of the household on a newly formed business while trying to establish clients. Once I gained my 9 to 5, I was able to pursue my entrepreneurial efforts without the worry of finances.

Disclaimer: It is this same financial safety net that blurred the line of complacency for me as Hubby, and I continued to progress in the 9 to 5 world.  However, I’m learning that this net is nothing more than an illusion as well. Yep. That’s an entirely different blog post!

HAVE A PLAN

Faith without works is DEAD!

I know I’ve lost a few people at “plan.” But I need you to thoroughly understand how IMPORTANT it is for you to have a plan FOR YOUR LIFE! You have to play Chess, not Checkers! Have a plan on how you are going to finance, execute, and achieve your entrepreneurial dreams. You are betting on yourself and now is not the time to “wing it.” Align yourself with your dream! Be the Dream! If planning isn’t your strong suit or you still don’t know where to start, I would suggest starting with your Local Small Business Administration Office.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Instead of saying I don’t have time, say it’s not a priority.

Time management consists of you setting priorities for yourself and executing them to achieve your goals. To do so, you would need to prioritize activities within your day to day life.  This may mean cutting out social gatherings, TV time, and gossip blogs on social media, (I know, I know). This may also mean attending conferences, network meetings, additional schooling or courses for certifications, etc. If YOUR dream is not a priority to you, it WILL NOT be a priority to anyone else.

PERFECT YOUR SIDE HUSTLE!

Your 9 to 5 should finance your 5 to 9

Before you jump with both feet in, now is the perfect time to start your project as a side hustle while you work. This way you can test the market to ensure there are customers for your products and/or services.  Start saving money from your 9 to 5 to finance your 5 to 9 from your 9 to 5. Even at $22.50 a paycheck, you are investing $50 a month into your 5 to 9.

Sound Off! What tips can you give our Side Hustling Sistas to assist them on their journey through entrepreneurship?
